Your initial consult with me will consist of information gathering and a hands on approach to chestfeeding or breastfeeding solutions. We can sit and talk over your goals and what part of feeding is not working the way you would like it to.
You'll feed your baby in your normal fashion; it is helpful to see how nursing is going for you, and it will give us a chance to spot any areas that might need improving. It has been my experience that many breastfeeding/chestfeeding issues can be resolved quickly and that your experience can become pain-free and comfortable again. Before I make any suggestions or adjustments, it is important to see what your baby is capable of. Every baby and parent is different, and their care should reflect that. You should choose a comfortable spot for our consult, so that feeding occurs as naturally as possible. Your support person is welcome to sit in.
If there is severe pain, I perform advanced pediatric assessments for signs of Ankyloglossia, which is a tight frenulum, also know as a tongue tie.
I will also do a thorough assessment of your infant. I observe carefully for anatomical differences in your baby, and other baby related concerns that can affect positioning comfort, and latch. I am always gentle, and I observe careful hygiene when handling your baby and wear gloves and a mask. I never, ever do any type of consult when I am sick or feeling unwell. For now, during the pandemic I appreciate mask wearing- I'll always have mine on to keep you safe and to limit your exposure. I wash my hands, I take my temperature and I have a stockpile of covid tests. I've been vaccinated and boosted, and I also have a current flu shot.
I have found that listening is an important aspect of consults, and while I may be an expert in breastfeeding, you are the expert in how your baby feels. Together we will go over some possible solutions, and after we have found a reasonable plan of action, we can follow up in a few days over the phone or in person to make sure the care plan is working well. I'm happy to offer referrals to local community support groups or specialists when needed.
Ethically no Lactation Consultant can accept a "kickback" for referring out to a specialist.
